I have been teaching for 22 years, but this year begins my 13th year at Joe Shafer Middle School. I have enjoyed teaching 6th grade Science for all 13 years. I love teaching Science, but even more than that, I LOVE teaching 6th graders!
Let me tell you now that I am a BIG Tennessee fan, and that includes even when they lose! I still love the Big Orange! We have several Florida fans on the 6th grade hall, but I hold strong!
I also love Bill Nye the Science Guy and have met him 3 times at Science conferences. I even had my picture made with him 2 times! We will watch several of his video lessons throughout the school year as a review of what we have learned. The students usually end up loving him as much as I do. (He even reminds us all of Mr. Daugherty, the band teacher!)
Besides teaching Science, I am also involved in the after-school program, Unity.com. I have taught several classes of Astronomy and Aerospace, as well as a cooking class. Mrs.Shadday and I have worked together to teach classes in multi-cultural studies, table manners and etiquette, and a class on healthy nutrition. Ms. Kenes and I have also taught Astronomy and Scrapbooking together.
I work with the Cumberland Astronomical Society in hosting Stargazer Parties held on the front or back of the campus. We try to have these each month, so watch the school marque for the date. We have a great time viewing the night sky, so make plans to join us!
Outside of school, I enjoy reading, cooking, walking, and spending as much time with family as possible, especially the grandkids! I am blessed to have 5 grandchildren right now, 4 boys and l girl, and they truly fill our lives with fun!
